The most widely cultivated species, Lavandula angustifolia is often referred to as lavender, and it also refers to a name of the colour.
A lavender is an herb with many culinary uses, it also makes a stunning borders and perennial gardens, providing sweeping drifts of colour from early summer into fall. Lavender is perennial that will last for years if grown under right conditions.
The common types of lavender are English lavender, French lavender, Spanish lavender and Lavandin. English lavenders and their hybrids are the best varieties for cooler climates. Spanish and French lavenders grow under extremely hot and humid climates.
Although all lavender is native to the Mediterranean, there are many varieties offering a vast selection of bloom times, colours, flower forms and sizes, bloom time can vary drastically between different locations. Growing lavender is easy and rewarding. Lavender can be grown in garden beds or the pots. To grow lavender successfully it needs well-drained soil and full sun. Lavender plant is grown mainly for the production of lavender essential oil, English lavender yields an oil with sweet overtones, and can be used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics and applications. Lavender is generally recognized as safe for human consumption, it is used as a spice or condiment in pastas, salads and dressings, and desserts. Their buds are used in teas, lavender greens have more subtle flavor with compared to rosemary. Lavender flowers are occasionally blended with black, green or herbal teas. Lavender flavours baked goods and desserts paring especially well with chocolate. Lavender is also used in scented waters and sachets. Please watch a short video about Lavender.
